A college move-out checklist that survives finals week

By the Momsity team · Updated

A smooth college move-out starts about a month early: confirm your school's move-out deadline and room-check rules, decide what you'll store, ship, take home, donate, or throw away, and book any storage, shipping, or help before finals week. The last few days are for packing, the final clean, and returning keys, not for figuring out where a futon is going.

Four weeks out: decide

  • Find the official move-out date, time, and checkout process for your residence hall
  • Read the room-condition rules, so you know what gets charged
  • Sort belongings into five groups: take home, store, ship, donate, toss
  • Compare storage options and book early; units near campus fill up
  • If a parent is helping from far away, agree who's handling which jobs

Two weeks out: book and start

  • Book storage pickup or a unit, and any help with carrying
  • Order boxes, tape, and labels
  • Start shipping or dropping off the things you won't need before you leave
  • Return library books, rented equipment, and borrowed items
  • Use up food rather than buying more

Finals week: pack and clear

Pack a little each day between exams instead of all at once. Keep a small "last night" bag with chargers, a change of clothes, toiletries, ID, and anything you need for travel.

Donation drop-offs and trash runs are the jobs most likely to get skipped and then charged for. Schedule them rather than hoping there's time.

Move-out day

  • Final clean: empty drawers, wipe surfaces, clear the fridge and unplug it if required
  • Take photos of the room once it's empty
  • Complete the room check and return keys or cards
  • Confirm storage pickup or drop-off happened and keep the receipt

Jobs that are easy to hand off

Most move-out stress comes from a handful of jobs that need a person, a car, or time a student doesn't have during exams. Those are the ones worth handing to local help, especially for parents who can't be on campus.

  • Runs to a storage unit you've rented
  • Shipping boxes home or taking them to a carrier
  • Donation drop-offs
  • The final clean
  • Carrying boxes and furniture (MOMs approved for moving)

Common mistakes

  • Waiting until finals week to book storage
  • Forgetting the room-check rules and paying cleaning or trash fees
  • Packing important documents, medication, or a laptop in storage boxes
  • No plan for furniture that won't fit in the car

If you're arranging move-out help

  • Residence hall name and general area; exact details go to the MOM you authorize
  • The move-out deadline and any building rules for helpers
  • What's going where: storage, shipping, donation, trash
  • Number of boxes and any large items
  • Whether the student will be there, and how to reach them
  • Who has the storage booking and receipts

Where Momsity fits

A parent or student can post move-out Tasks near campus on Momsity: storage runs, packages, donation drop-offs, a final clean, or moving help from a MOM approved for moving. MOMs nearby can offer and you choose who helps. Building and room details are shared only after you authorize a MOM.

What Momsity doesn't do

  • Momsity doesn't provide storage space or boxes; you arrange those.
  • MOMs aren't a licensed moving company and don't bring a truck by default.
  • Follow your school's rules about who can enter residence halls.
